‘Feeding the 5000’ volunteer group provides meals Thanksgiving day

A group of volunteers woke up bright and early Thanksgiving morning to deliver food to struggling families across Southwest Florida. Arthur Nicoletti, manager of the group Feeding the 5000 says the group has been around and feeding families for years. “It started about 17 years ago, and it was just a local church thing and people came for Thanksgiving and then they realized some of the people couldn’t make it so they sent the food back out to them,” he said. Help feed others Thanksgiving Day

What started as a simple Thanksgiving meal for a few dozen people has grown into the largest Thanksgiving outreach program in Southwest Florida. In the past 10 years, this little Lutheran/Episcopal church has served over 65,000 Thanksgiving meals. Last year’s Feeding the 5,000, named after a miracle of Jesus, delivered more than 6,000 dinners to local families in need.

Feeding the masses: Annual event reaches more than 6,500 Southwest Florida residents

By Laura Gates, Correspondent. Nearly 500 turkeys were roasted in the kitchen at Lamb of God Church last week in preparation for Feeding the 5,000, a collaborative charitable outreach which aimed to ensure every Southwest Florida family enjoyed a hearty holiday meal. Now in its 15th year, this volunteer-based operation has provided about 58,000 Thanksgiving dinners, including serving more than 6,500 this year, said Steering Committee Chair Art Nicoletti. Fort Myers church, volunteers deliver 6,000 meals

LEE COUNTY, FL – The Lamb of God Church in Fort Myers delivered over 6,000 Thanksgiving meals today. That equals 400 turkeys, six tons of sides and 2,000 cups of gravy and cranberry sauce. For the last decade, the Lamb of God Church and hundreds of volunteers personally deliver a Thanksgiving feast to those less fortunate. Season of giving: SWFL offers tons of opportunities to help those in need

Lamb of God partners with United Way to identify local families in need. The operation takes more than 400 volunteers. It begins with turkey roasting the Sunday before Thanksgiving and continues with food preparation and packing through Wednesday. Drivers are needed to deliver meals on Thanksgiving Day.

Feeding the 5000 fed over 7,400 meals on Thanksgiving Day 2013! This year, over 800 volunteers came together to cook, package, and deliver 7,400+ meals–that’s over 478 turkeys and more than 10,000 lbs of side dishes! In the past 5 years, we’ve provided over 30,000 meals in our community.

Feeding 5,000: Local church takes on annual Thanksgiving effort

By Laura Gates. Jesus did it with just five loaves and two fishes. It takes a bit more for Lamb of God Church and its community partners to feed 5,000. The annual Thanksgiving outreach relies on hundreds of volunteers to cook, package and distribute nearly 500 turkeys— along with all the fixings— feeding the needy in a five-county area. The massive effort starts the weekend before Thanksgiving, roasting turkeys in batches of two dozen at a time.
